How roller derby has (hopefully) prepared me for labor and delivery

There is a mantra in roller derby that states: “You can do anything for two minutes.”  For the unaware, this is because a jam in roller derby lasts two minutes at most.  You remind yourself that you can push through your fatigue to perform at your best for those two minutes before you get a break (even if that break is just 30 seconds long).

Lately as I’ve been thinking about labor and, frankly, being scared shitless at the prospect of how painful it will be, I’ve found myself thinking about roller derby and all of the physical challenges the sport has provided me with.  When I focus on all of those things that I can do, the prospect of labor seems less frightening.  Even though I am 9 months past my derby prime of physical fitness, I think my training has prepared me in many ways for labor, both physically and mentally.  I decided to compile a short list of some of those things.  Maybe after I actually deliver the baby and experience labor for myself, I will write a blog entry describing how completely wrong I was about everything!
